You've heard of Newton and whatever the truth may be about that apple. You've been told the tale of Alexander Fleming and penicillin. You may even know about Roy Plunkett and his accidental discovery of Teflon. But have you heard of Makoto Imai who set his sights on inventing a rather unusual alarm clock?

Go back a hundred years or so and there were a plethora of untapped opportunities for scientific research. Now the periodic table is bulging with guests, and new discoveries are harder to find.

As we approach the 2015 Ig Nobel prize awards, we've set our sights on not necessarily the greatest, but certainly the weirdest and most wonderful: The World's Most Pointless Scientific Discoveries.
