Week’s Best Space Pictures: Earth as Abstract Art

Feed your need for heavenly views of the universe with our pick of the most awe-inspiring space pictures. This week, a galaxy's starburst region shines brightly and an almost planet gets a closer look.

1. Australia as Art

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly snapped a series of 17 pictures of Australia as the International Space Station flew over the land down under. This image is the first in the series.

2. In Flux

Saturn's F ring is constantly changing thanks to the movement of moons Pandora and Prometheus and a potential host of moonlets within the ring. Features like gores (bright divot) can form and fade in a matter of hours to days.

3. Parched

Raging forest fires exacerbated by extreme drought are sweeping through southeast Asian islands like Sumatra and Borneo. A satellite image shows the Indonesian side of Borneo covered in smoke from the regions worst forest fires in 20 years.

4. Close-Up

Dwarf planet Ceres gets some close attention from the Dawn spacecraft in an image released Wednesday. The image shows the protoplanet's mid-latitude region at an altitude of 915 miles (1,470 kilometres).

5. Starburst

Galaxy Messier 94 dazzles in this Hubble image released October 19. The milky-looking region in the middle is called a starburst ring due to the high rate of star formation thanks to a pressure wave emanating from the centre.
