The Smartest Connected Home Products of CES 2017

PC Magazine, 9 January 2017.

Forget roosters - at CES, 2017 is the year of Alexa. You could hardly walk down an aisle without spotting some sort of smart lighting, security camera, lock, or hub that had some sort of integration with Amazon's favorite assistant.

But a smart home isn't really a smart home without your fair share of intelligent, and sometimes wacky, appliances, gadgets, and even mattresses. And let's not forget cool gadgets for our furry friends. Whether you imagine an adorable robot assistant like Kuri, or a sleek Lenovo Smart Assistant, a life like the Jetsons might not be too far off after all.

We ambled through the Smart Home Marketplace to find you the coolest smart home tech around. Start planning your dream smart home by checking out below.

1. Kuri

This little fella is so cute, he'll melt your face off. Able to greet guests, patrol your home, play music, read to the kids, and tell the dog not to sit on the couch, Kuri is the adorable robot companion we've wanted since R2-D2 made his film debut. You can pre-order the US$699 Kuri with a US$100 deposit; it's expected to arrive in time for holiday 2017.

2. Sleep Number 360

Wouldn't it be great if your bed could warm your feet or lift your head to stop you from snoring? Well, the Sleep Number 360 does all that and adjusts firmness depending on your favorite sleep positions. So starfish or plop face-first into bed to your heart's content. The Sleep Number 360 smart bed will be available in the first half of 2017; pricing has not been announced.

3. Kerastase Hair Coach Powered by Withings

Bad hair days could be a thing of the past with this smart hairbrush from Kerastase, L'Oreal, and Withings. It'll tell you if your hair is "unruly" and even vibrate if you're brushing too hard, plus give you tips on how to have locks that look like they belong in a shampoo commercial. It arrives in mid-2017, and will retail for under US$200.

4. Lenovo Smart Assistant

It might look like an Amazon Echo, but it's not. The Lenovo Smart Assistant uses Alexa, but looks sleeker, costs less, and features great sound with Harmon Kardon speakers. Smart Assistant with Amazon Alexa arrives in May for US$129.99.

5. LG Smart InstaView Fridge

Alexa strikes again. With her help, LG Smart InstaView Fridge edges out the Samsung Family Hub 2.0 by helping you jam to your favorite tunes, answer questions, and some other neat tricks. On top of that, the Smart InstaView Fridge features a 29-inch touch screen that you can use to search recipes, and there are cameras inside so you can keep an eye on your food.

6. Hydrao Loop

It's easy for time to slip away in a nice long shower...except when it wastes a ton of water and costs you money. The Hydrao Loop flashes different colors while you're showering to indicate how much water you've used and pairs with an app that tracks your usage and savings over time. US shipments start Jan. 16; order now for US$99.

7. PetCube

Pets are part of the family too, so why should they be left out? The Petcube Bites is an interactive pet camera that lets you snoop on your favorite floof. When they're good, you can tap a finger to fling them a treat when you're not home. Pre-order now via Best Buy for US$229.99.

8. Catspad

Tubby cats rule the Internet, but being portly is not great for their health. The Catspad is a smart feeder that controls how much dry food they get, tracks their diet, and filters fresh water to keep them hydrated. And it looks pretty futuristic, too. It's currently available on Kickstarter for about US$228.

9. Shadecraft Sunflower

This giant autonomous solar-powered patio umbrella wants you to stay shady. It's still a prototype, but the Sunflower from Shadecraft is jam-packed with features, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, security camera, and speakers. Expect to see Alexa and Nest integration once it launches in 2018, too.

10. Jooki

Kids love music...but maybe you don't want them to start listening to Ozzy Osbourne at the tender age of 5. Jooki by MuuseLabs is a sturdy, brightly colored little jukebox that parents can use to customize what their children listen to. Whether you stream radio, podcasts, or curated playlists, the Jooki is adorably kid-friendly and parent-approved. Pre-order on Indiegogo starting at US$159.
